Vodafone unveils phone-charging sleeping bags and shorts

Vodafone has unveiled unique sleeping bags and shorts for charging mobile phones in this summer’s Isle of Wight festival in the UK. The Sleeping bag and shorts have a technology that charges your mobile devices while walking, sleeping or even dancing. The devices harvest body heat and movement to increase the battery life of your mobile device.

The sleeping bags and short pants launched by Vodafone are called ‘Recharge Bags’ and ‘Power Shorts'. They contain special printed circuits that convert the user’s body heat or any movement whether sleeping, dancing, walking in to power for their mobile phones.

The technology for the Recharge Bag and Power Shorts was developed by Vodafone in collaboration with the University of Southampton’s Electronics and Computer Science Department. The technology called "smart fabric" is ideal for campers in outdoor events and can become a 24-hour power source for the users.

According to the company, if you sleep in the Recharge Bag for eight hours it will generate battery life that will give the user 11 hours of standby time, or 24 minutes of talk time; whereas walking in the Power Shorts will give the user over four hours of battery life. It uses thermal energy from the sleeping bag to create energy and kinetic energy from the shorts to power your mobile devices.

Google's Project Loon explores balloon-powered Internet access

The pilot program, Project Loon, took off this month from New Zealand's South Island, using solar-powered, high-altitude balloons that ride the wind about 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) - twice as high as airplanes - above the ground, Google said.

Like the Internet search engine for which Google is best known, Project Loon uses algorithms to determine where the balloons need to go, then moves them into winds blowing in the desired direction, the company said.

By moving with the wind, the balloons form a network of airborne hot spots that can deliver Internet access over a broad area at speeds comparable to 3G using open radio frequency bands, Google said.

To connect to the balloon network, a special Internet antenna is attached to buildings below.

The Mountain View, Calif-based company announced the project on its official blog here, and its website www.google.com/loon/.

The 30 balloons deployed in New Zealand this month will beam Internet to a small group of pilot testers and be used to refine the technology and shape the next phase of Project Loon, Google said.

Google did not say what it was spending on the pilot project or how much a global network of balloons might cost.

Google has also developed self-driving vehicles, which the company says could significantly increase driving safety.

Those vehicles are beginning to gain support from lawmakers in places like California, where a bill legalizing their operation on state roads was signed into law last by Governor Jerry Brown.

AppleCare

According to an Apple employee who attended last Thursday's town hall meeting between Apple's tech employees and company VP Tara Bunch, changes are coming to AppleCare and AppleCare+. A person familiar with the matter said that a number of changes will be referred to as the "One Apple" brand.

The biggest change has to do with how Apple iPhone models will be repaired. An anonymous active Apple employee who could not reveal her name, said that under the current process, someone bringing in a broken Apple iPhone has the unit exchanged for a 'like new' refurbished model whether the exchange is done at an Apple Store on through the mail. Under the new guidelines, Apple will try to fix the busted device right there in front of the owner with the target of handing the customer his own unit-repaired-back to him./Apple Stores, which currently have parts in stock to repair the speakers, receivers, home buttons, the vibrator motor and battery, will be adding more parts next month. Starting in June, Apple Stores will have the capability torepair and exchange displays. By July, Store employees will be able to deal with cameras, sleep/wake buttons and logic boards. Additionally, employees will be able to use advanced diagnostic tools that will more rapidly give them a diagnosis on what is ailing a broken iPhone allowing users to more quickly find a problem with an Apple iPhone and repair it.

The new in-house repair policy will start in the U.S. and will then get expanded overseas. Apple says it will save $1 billion dollars making the change. For those whose device is out of warranty, in-house service will cost extra based on the device. Apple has already started the new changes at certain locations with customers response being mostly positive. Apple is also looking to expand its home advisory employees which currently number 4,200. Apple wants to double the number of these employees on a year-over-year basis to cut overhead and also to have a larger pool of potential employees to choose from. 

Additionally, AppleCare will become a subscription model attached to a person rather than a specific device. Free after care phone support will cover 1 year with possibly two years getting covered in the future. Presently, 90 days of after sales free phone support is allowed without buying AppleCare. Online charts, articles and Genius Bar visits will continue to be free.

FIRST 3D ANDROID MOBILE WITHOUT 3D GLASS

After the A116 Canvas HD, the Canvas 2 A110, Canvas Viva A72, and theCanvas A100, Micromax is introducing a fourth member to the Canvas family. Christened the A115 Canvas 3D, the device boasts of an autostereoscopic 3D display. The Canvas 3D is priced at Rs. 9,999 and will be available form the first week of May.

Just like the Canvas HD and the A110, the Canvas 3D has a 5-inch display. The A115 also houses a 1GHz dual-core processor, and runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The rear has a 5MP camera and the front has a 0.3MP camera for video calling. A 2000mAh battery powers the smartphone and Micromax claims that the device will last for up to 4.5 hours of talk time. The smartphone also supports Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and expandable storage up to 32GB via a microSD card. The RAM and built in storage isn’t known.

Being a 3D smartphone, Micromax claims that users won’t need to wear 3D glasses to consume content on the smartphone. Users will have access to “Micromax 3D Space” giving them access to 3D videos and 3D games.

This isn’t the first time that we have seen a 3D smartphone. We have had the LG Optimus 3D and the HTC Evo 3D hit store shelves in India. The two smartphones were premium priced and boasted of glasses free 3D displays and dual rear cameras for clicking 3D images. Both the smartphones failed to catch any market attention. We have also seen some budget smartphones take a shot at 3D displays but all in vain.

How the 3D display of the Canvas 3D performs is something we will comment on once we have our hands on the smartphone. Up till now there is only one device that has given us an accurate picture of depth perception without the use of 3D glasses and that is the Nintendo 3DS. The hand held gaming console is the closest we have come to having a great glasses free 3D experience. On other devices, especially the previously launched 3D smartphones, the experience has been mostly gimmicky.

Micromax has been on roll launching budget devices in India and making a name for it self. Recently, Micromax claimed that it has sold over 1 million Canvas devices. But all hasn’t been well for the budget smartphone king. Recently Ericsson sued Micromax for infringing patents pertaining to 2G and 3G wireless technologies.

The Canvas HD, Canvas A116 and the Canvas Viva A72 have been successful budget smartphones in their respective price brackets. Will this winning streak continue with the Canvas 3D, or will the smartphone crash and burn? The event is scheduled just a couple of weeks after Microsoft will reveal its next-generation Xbox console on May 21. The June 10 event is likely to reveal a lot more on the next version of the Xbox, and so far, Major Nelson has stated that some of the console's preliminary launch line-up would be on display there.

Rumours hovering around also suggest possibilities of celebrities showing up. Over the past few years Xbox press conferences have seen appearances by Usher, Paul McCartney and Steven Spielberg to promote their games. Expect the same this year and enjoy the ride.

Security analyst develops Android app that can hijack and crash airplanes

A security analyst has revealed how simple it is to hack into the communication link-up between a plane and the air traffic control system, and the plane’s navigation system in order to change the plane’s route or even to crash it. Hugo Teso, an analyst with German IT security company N.Runs AG, and a licensed commercial pilot has developed an exploit framework called Simon which is used by an Android app to deliver data that can instigate an attack against an airplane.


While speaking at the Hack in the Box conference in Amsterdam, Teso revealed that he could exploit a plane’s Automatic Dependant Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, the system that transmits the plane’s current navigation details to Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) and the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), a communication link between the plane and the ATC, to feed in false information and cause the plane to change course or get into an accident. Teso said that it took three years to develop the Simon framework which uses information from Flightsradar24, a free website that tracks flight paths in real-time, and publicly available Flight Management System hardware and software, both of which are very similar (but not exactly the same) as the ones used in the real world. Teso showed the audience at the conference that by sending the command “visit ground” through the app using radio signals, he could force the plane to change course and crash. He also showed how he could get a plane to change its speed, altitude and bearings using the same method.

Fortunately, Teso’s system can only be used virtually at present and a hijacker would only be able to remotely control a plane if it was within the antenna range of his hacking system. Also, if a pilot somehow was able to recognize the infiltration, he could take control of the plane manually, since Teso’s system can only influence the plane when it’s in autopilot mode. Teso stressed on how vulnerable the existing ACARS was and how a plane would have no way to determine if the data being transmitted through ACARS was valid.

Teso’s hacks have been developed keeping in mind the newly updated ADS-B system which will be implemented almost globally in the coming years as a result of a directive by the US government that states that by 2020, any flights operating in its airspace should have an ADS-B system installed. Teso says that he has been in touch with airlines to fix the vulnerabilities in the ADS-B system.

Along with Shodan, the search engine that can be used to control nuclear plants, Teso’s Simon makes the rest of the 21st century sound like a very dangerous time to live in. Fortunately, at least for the time being, both Shodan and Simon are almost exclusively being used by security experts and researchers to find and seal off security vulnerabilities rather than exploit them.

Why iOS 5 is better than Android Gingerbread 2.3.3

Apple’s robust operating system has just got better with the announcement of new iOS 5. The streamlined and integrated operating system is anticipated to hit the devices by fall of 2011. Google has been one pioneer in OS stream that has looked to challenge iOS with its Android platform.

However, its new release, Gingerbread, is still far behind the bench-marked iOS. In order to better understand the key differences between these platforms following parameters should be considered:

• Social Integration – The new iOS 5 platform will be integrated with Twitter streams and the photo tagging feature on the new platform will be intrinsic. Apple has not chose Facebook but instead opted for lighter, Twitter. There are no intrinsic social integration capabilities in Gingerbread and the custom apps should instead be downloaded on the Android enabled devices to access social streams on the go.
  
  
• Free iMessage Feature – iOS 5 will allow a user in sending free messages to other iOS users without any additional costs. No such feature exists till date in Android.
• Security – iOS is a matured, stable and highly secured platform that can be leveraged by the end users under toughest of security constraints without any hassles. Android’s Gingerbread has handful of bugs and is vulnerable to attacks. Instead of getting culminated the number of attacks is instead on the rise.
• Ad-Free Content – Apple’s iOS 5 will support Safari Reader feature allowing the readers to only view text stream without any ads, scripts or videos. Android’s Gingerbread lacks the feature all together and instead relies on third party vendor apps.
• Cloud Support – Apple has changed the dynamics of the tech market by announcing iCloud on new iOS 5. The end users will be able to store data and access apps over the new iCloud feature. The data will get automatically synced up with all iOS enabled devices without any hassles. As a result, customers need not buy apps again on all the iOS devices held by them. Android’s Gingerbread does not support any custom cloud based solution and instead relies on old school of local storage.
• Split Keyboard – iOS 5 will support split keyboard interface on the devices once the solution is upgraded. Gingerbread 2.3.3 supports standard keyboards which is pretty similar to iOS 4.3.
• Multitasking Capabilities – Although iOS 5 and Gingerbread 2.3.3 fair almost equally in the parameter the edge again lies with iOS 5. The new platform if used over A5 chipset will provide better results. Similarly, if Gingerbread 2.3.3 is used over 800Mhz-1Ghz CPU will yield better multitasking experience on the go.

Sundar Pichai to head Android at Google after Andy Rubin steps down

Sundar Pichai, the Google executive responsible for projects such as Chrome, Chrome OS and Google Drive, will be heading Android after Andy Rubin’s departure. Pichai, whose last position within Google was Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps, will now be responsible for the Android mobile OS and also the Chrome web browser and laptop OS, perhaps pointing to a Google strategy that merges both operating systems to form a single platform.


Pichai has been with Google since 2004 and one of his first projects was the Google Toolbar browser add-on that let users install a Google search bar on their browsers, that also provided access to other Google services like YouTube. Pichai is an IIT-Kharagpur alumni where he did his B.Tech in Metallurgy, after which he did courses in Stanford and Wharton Business School. In 2011, Pichai was closely linked to a move to Twitter to head the social networking company’s product division but he stayed with Google.

Pichai succeeds Rubin who founded Android in 2003, and later headed the mobile OS team when it was acquired by Google in 2005, till the present day. Rubin is widely recognized for being one of the main Google execs responsible for Android’s rise as the biggest mobile platform in the world. Rubin is now rumoured to start working on projects involving robotics and home automation.

As mentioned above, one of Pichai’s key responsibilities in his new role will be to oversee the gradual merger of Chrome OS with ANdroid in order for Google to present a single operating system running on mobiles, tablets and PCs. This isn’t a new Google strategy but something that has been discussed earlier in the corridors of Mountain View as revealed by Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder, who revealed to CNET that Android and Chrome OS “will likely converge over time.”

Sony Xperia J Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update starts rolling out

Sony Mobile has started rolling out Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update  (v 11.2.A.0.21) for the Xperia J, as they promised. Sony Xperia T and Xperia V got the Jelly Bean update last month. Sony confirmed Jelly Bean update for range of 2012 Xperia devices back in October. Sony Xperia P and Xperia go would be the next devices that would get the Android 4.1 update according to their schedule.

The new Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update for the Xperia J brings

• Extended Standby to improve battery time by preventing data traffic when the screen is off
• Easier access to commonly used settings with Quick settings with notification bar
• Sony Select is a new service (replacing “Recommender”) that recommends apps, games and music.

The Xperia J users would get a notification regarding the update. It would be available Over the Air (OTA) (depending on the regions and carriers) and via PC Companion on Windows/ Bridge for Mac. This update would be rolled out over the next few weeks and the availability might vary across different carriers and countries.

Nokia partners with New India Assurance to provide handset insurance

Nokia India has partnered with New India Assurance (NIA), a leading global insurance group, wholly owned by the Govt. of India to launch handset insurance plan. This would let you safeguard your device against thefts, burglary, malicious acts, riots among others, as well as damage. It starts at minimum insurance premium of just Rs. 50, and the plan will cost 1.25% of the purchased handset’s value. Consumers purchasing their handsets from a Nokia Branded Retail Store can provide their personal details and receive their insurance certificate, handout and payment receipt to avail this plan.

New India Assurance and Nokia have mutually agreed and tied up with an IRDA Licensed Insurance Broker, which would offer several Value Added Services exclusively to Nokia consumers at a additional fee of Rs. 50 per device irrespective of the device cost.Customers can contact the call centre managed by the Insurance Broker to report claims.

This Value Added service is available in 6 cities including Delhi & NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad Chennai and Kolkata that includes pickup (within 24 hours of a call being registered) and drop facilities. In case of thefts, consumers will need to file a written report with police authorities and report the loss of SIM to the concerned network service provider and acknowledgement to be furnished.

Cashless service will allow claimants to submit their devices at the nearest authorized service center and have their claims processed. If the damage is within purview of Insurance, the device will be repaired and be delivered back to the consumer at his door step. In the interim period, consumers will also be provided with standby handsets and chargers.

The plan will be available from March 14, 2013 on all Nokia devices purchased through Nokia Branded Retail stores. It would be initially available in Delhi and the National Capital Region, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Cochin.

Cisco’s ‘Dwara’ to connect educators

Cisco Technologies announced the launch of the Cisco Education Enabled Development (CEED), a collaborative, cloud-based video interaction solution that will enable efficient delivery of education and skills development courses.

Named Dwara, after the Sanskrit word for portal to signify a doorway to a new future, this is Cisco’s first foray into the ‘Internet of everything’ solutions.

Dwara will allow educators in rural areas to connect with experts and trainers from urban centres.

According to a release from Cisco, CEED hardware is designed for harsh environments where temperature and dust can be high. It is energy efficient and uses 40 per cent less power, and thus ideal for rural environments.

“With a built-in router that also acts as a Wi-Fi access point, a computer and a projection device, this solution allows multiple students using devices like the Akash tablet that the [Union government] is trying to develop, to share a single Internet connection. It can also facilitate connections to well-known education portals such as the one produced by the National Information Centre,” the release said.

Aravind Sitaraman, president, Inclusive Growth, Cisco, said: “CEED is Cisco’s first step towards bringing inclusive growth to rural areas using the latest technology at extremely affordable prices. It has the potential to revolutionise learning and skills development in this country. HP Education Services and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, (IIITB) announced new IT infrastructure certificate programs for undergraduate students across the country.

According to a release, students can explore careers in the growing remote infrastructure management industry. Remote infrastructure management technology includes management of workstations, communications and networking hardware and software, and applications.

Certificate programmes in integrated networks, network security and cloud networking would be offered, the release added.

Emergency alert system for women

On Women’s Day, telecom service provider Bharti Airtel launched a solution that aims at making women feel safe. The emergency alerts solution allows customers to send an alert with their geographical location to 10 close contacts, with just one call, facilitating access to easy and quick help. Subscribers can even send a ‘safe’ SMS indication to a pre-defined group of 10 to keep them informed of their well-being with just one click, a release from Airtel said.

This facility can be accessed using feature phones or dialling 55100 (toll free).

In the week following Women’s Day, this service will be available for free.

New tablet on the block

Indian tablet maker Pantel Technologies has launched another tablet PC, the Penta T-pad WS708c, an Android-powered tablet with a 7-inch capacitive touch screen.

Priced at around Rs. 7,000, it comes with free 3D goggles allowing the user to enjoy uninterrupted 3D viewing, a release from the company stated.

In the release, Vijender Singh, managing director, Pantel Technologies, said: “It gives me immense pleasure to announce the latest gadget, laden with an assortment of exciting features that are fine tuned to our consumers’ demands.”

Lava Xolo Q800 quad-core Jelly Bean smartphone

Lava Mobiles has launched its first quad-core phone in India, the Lava Xolo Q800, priced at Rs. 12,499. Bearing a 4.5-inch qHD IPS display, the phone differentiates itself from the new segment of 5-inch budget quad-core phablets, currently populated by theMicromax A116 Canvas HD, and the WickedLeak Wammy Passion. The Jiayu G4 and Karbonn Smart Titanium 1 are two other soon to be launched such devices.

According to Lava, the company will launch more handsets in its quad-core range (called QCore) in the coming quarter. The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-based Xolo Q800 is powered by a MediaTek MT6589 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex A7 processor, a 286MHz PowerVR SGX544 GPU, and 1GB of RAM. This gives it the same chipset as the Micromax A116 Canvas HD, WickedLeak Wammy Passion, and Jiayu G4.

Other specifications of the Lava Xolo Q800 include 4 GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD card (up to 32GB); an 8MP rear BSI camera with 720p HD video recording, burst mode, and a dedicated camera key; a 1.2MP front-facing camera; a YAMAHA 168 PA music system; dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) capabilities; and a 2100 mAh battery that’s rated to deliver up to 360 hours of standby time, 16 hours of talk time (2G), 22 hours of continuous music playback, and 4.5 hours of continuous video playback.

In terms of connectivity, the Xolo Q800 offers 3G (HSPA+), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, microUSB, 3.5mm audio jack, A-GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0. It has dimensions of 135.5 x 67 x 9.6 mm, and weighs in at 143.5 grams.

Micromax A110 Canvas 2 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update coming next week

Micromax A110 Canvas 2 would get the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update next week, according to reports from Tech2. Micromax launched the A110 Canvas 2 last year, and we reviewed it earlier this year. The company’s latest Smartphone  the A116 Canvas HD comes with Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) out of the box, and they already said that it would get the Android 4.2 update eventually.

The Micromax A110 Canvas 2 is the successor of the A100 Canvas. It has a 5-inch (480 x 854 pixels) TFT capacitive touch screen IPS display, powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor and packs a 2000 mAh battery.

The Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update for the A110 would not be available as a over-the-air (OTA) update or through a software suite, but users have to go to the Micromax Service Centers to get their devices flashed to Android 4.1. No news about the Jelly Bean update for the Micromax 90S that launched along with the A110.

CCleaner for Android coming soon

Piriform, the creators of the popular system cleaning utility CCleaner for Windows and Mac hasannounced that they are working on an Android app. CCleaner for Android would be a one-click cleaning utility that would let you clear your browser history, Cache, Messages and more as you can see from their teaser image above. It’ll be quick and easy to set up and use just like the CCleaner desktop apps, says the company.

Still the app is in testing stage, and there are no details about the release date or the pricing yet. There are several free Cleaner apps for Android such as Clean Master, 1Tap Cleaner and more that offers similar features including Option to clear Cache, History, Call/Text logs etc. CCleaner for PC is available in three version, Free, Professional and Business Edition.

It would be interesting to see whether the company plans to release the Android app for free, only paid or go for a separate pro version along with a free version. We will let you know once the app hits the Google Play Store.

Google shuts down Chennai Motorola plant; lays off 76 employees

Google has indefinitely suspended the operations of the Motorola phone manufacturing plant in Chennai and laid off 76 workers. Motorola has also sent an e-mail to its employees stating that the company will begin laying off 1,200 employees from its offices in India, China and the U.S. Motorola has said that these layoffs are part of the overall cost-cutting measures that the company had announced last year. Motorola had planned to lay-off a total of 4,000 employees, which would be about 20% of its total workforce.

The email, a copy of which has been analysed by The Wall Street Journal, states that although Motorola is “optimistic” about its new products, it is still suffering from high costs mainly because of its presence in markets (like India, China and the U.S.) where it’s “not competitive” and “losing money.”

In spite of being acquired by Google in 2011, Motorola hasn’t been able to crawl back to profitability. The company declared a loss of more than $350 million in the last quarter of 2012, following the operating loss of $500 million it posted in the third quarter. Motorola products also haven’t really managed to make a splash in global markets and we haven’t seen a big product launch from Motorola in a while.

Motorola will hope to arrest its free-fall with the upcoming flagship smartphone, currently titled the ‘X Phone.’ The X Phone is expected to be revealed at the Google I/O conference in May and made available for purchase in July. It will probably be the platform lead device for Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie).

Google Play Books now available in India

Google has finally brought books to the Google Play Store in India. This would let the users browser, purchase and read from thousands of Indian eBook titles and millions of international eBooks from several categories on the Google Play Store. You can also read the purchased books on Android, iPhone, iPad and on Desktop. These books are competitively priced, and most of the books are priced similar to the Flipkart Flye eBooks and the Amazon Kindle eBooks Store.

Apple’s iBooks lets you download only free classics in India, and the Flipkart’s Flyte eBook app is not available for iPhone or iPad yet, so Kindle and Google Play Books are the only options for iPhone and iPad users in India.

Sony releases Firefox OS experimental ROM for Xperia E

Sony confirmed that they are working on a Firefox OS device earlier this week. Now they have released a experimental ROM for Xperia E that would let developers try it our and get familiarise with the new OS. The Firefox OS is based on the open web standards that offers every feature in the phone developed as an HTML5 application and the user experience are developed by HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The Firefox OS has Firefox Marketplace to download apps.

Since this is an experimental version, the OS might be unstable, and the radios don’t work yet.
